Artist Statement

In my work I am exploring themes of repetition and simplicity through the use of paper, thread and ink as my mark making material. Small paper shapes and stitched lines become the elements of my visual language. The contrast between accumulating marks and the expression of simplicity fascinates me.

To me, cutting or stitching on paper as a repeated process has a slow paced, reflective connection. Finding paper, applying ink, poking holes for stitching, and collaging are a way to celebrate creating by hand using everyday materials. I follow a process of curiosity about a shape or a stitched line. Each iteration of the elements shows variation. Allowing this variation or imperfection is part of what I am studying with my work while I explore an idea of beauty that is spare, abstract, and unhurried.
